The Senate has passed a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide for the establishment of state police services across the federation.
The bill was approved following a rigorous clause-by-clause consideration and secured the support of more than two-thirds of the senators, meeting the constitutional requirement for its passage.
One of the key provisions of the proposed legislation empowers state governors to appoint Commissioners of Police for their respective states, subject to confirmation by the state Houses of Assembly.
The move is aimed at strengthening security architecture at the sub-national level and enhancing the capacity of states to tackle local security challenges more effectively.
