An Abuja Magistrate Court has sentenced a man to one month of community service after he was found guilty of stealing electrical cables valued at over ₦2 million from a mosque in Wuse II.
The convict was ordered to sweep the mosque premises daily for one month as part of the judgment delivered by the court.
According to reports, the suspect was arrested after allegedly carting away electrical cables and other items belonging to the mosque, causing significant damage to the facility’s electrical installations.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence linking the defendant to the theft, leading to his conviction.
The presiding magistrate, while delivering judgment, warned against acts of theft and vandalism, stressing the need for individuals to respect religious centres and public property.
Residents and worshippers around the area have reacted to the ruling, with many describing the sentence as both corrective and symbolic, considering the nature of the offence committed within a place of worship.
