A coalition of Christian communities in Kwara State has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the emergence of a Christian governor in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.
The group, operating under the umbrella of the Conglomerate of Kwara State Christian Communities, said its demand is driven by the need for fairness, inclusiveness and equitable political representation after what it described as decades of Muslim dominance in the state’s governorship.
In an open letter dated June 27, 2026, the coalition appealed to President Tinubu, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to support a qualified Christian candidate for the governorship ticket.
According to the coalition, Christians have consistently supported Muslim governorship candidates in the state since the return to democracy in 1999 and believe the time has come for a Christian to occupy the state’s highest political office.
The group maintained that its appeal should not be interpreted as promoting religious politics but as a call for justice, inclusion and equal opportunities for all religious groups. It also pledged to work with Muslim stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and united political process.
The coalition further commended President Tinubu’s administration for its efforts in tackling insecurity, promoting economic reforms and strengthening national unity. It expressed confidence that presenting a Christian candidate would foster greater unity within the APC and improve the party’s electoral prospects in Kwara State in 2027.
The development comes as political consultations and succession debates continue to gather momentum across Kwara State ahead of the next governorship election, with issues of zoning, competence and inclusiveness expected to dominate political discussions in the coming months.
