Yesterday, Sunday May 10th, 2026 in Iwoland, the call for active Muslim participation in politics was strongly re-echoed during a one-day sensitization lecture organized by the Muslim Political Awareness Forum (MUPAF) under the leadership of Comrade Obenbe Lukman.
The programme, which was held at the Iwo Central Mosque, attracted prominent dignitaries, Islamic scholars, community leaders, intellectuals, and Muslim faithful from different parts of Iwoland and beyond. Among those in attendance were, Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdul Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, Professor Lai Olurode, Alhaji Liad Tells, the Chief Imam of Iwoland, Dr. Abdulmunin Thanni, alongside several other respected personalities.
In their separate remarks, the speakers emphasized the urgent need for Muslims, especially in Yorubaland, to actively participate in politics and governance. They noted that political involvement is no longer optional but a necessary means of protecting the interests of Muslims and ensuring inclusive representation in government and public affairs.
Speaking at the gathering, the Oluwo of Iwoland stressed that Muslims must not distance themselves from leadership and governance, adding that meaningful political participation remains one of the strongest tools for societal transformation and development.
Professor Lai Olurode also encouraged Muslims to become more politically conscious, organized, and strategic, stressing that Muslims must move beyond mere criticism of government policies to active participation in decision-making processes.
The Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, in his lecture, urged Muslims to embrace unity, political awareness, and collective responsibility. He noted that the future of the Muslim Ummah depends greatly on the willingness of Muslims to engage actively in governance and leadership at all levels.
The programme also featured special admonitions by the Chief Imam of Iwoland, Dr. Abdul Mumin Thanni, who advised Muslims to remain steadfast, peaceful, and guided by Islamic principles while participating in politics. He emphasized that political engagement should be driven by justice, sincerity, accountability, and the desire to promote the welfare of society.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and prayers for unity, progress, and greater political consciousness among Muslims in Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.
