The leading opposition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, expressing concerns over electoral processes and recent developments within the commission.
The protest, which drew party members, supporters, and civil society allies, was held in a calm and orderly manner, with participants carrying placards bearing inscriptions calling for transparency, accountability, and reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Addressing the crowd, top officials of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) emphasized the need for credible elections, stating that democracy can only thrive where electoral institutions operate independently and fairly. They urged INEC to uphold its constitutional mandate without bias or external influence.
The protesters accused the commission of failing to adequately address certain irregularities observed in recent electoral activities, calling for immediate corrective measures. They also demanded greater transparency in voter registration, result collation, and the use of technology in elections.
Security personnel were present at the scene to ensure law and order, but the demonstration remained peaceful throughout, with no reported incidents of violence or disruption.
In response, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission acknowledged receipt of the protesters’ complaints and assured them that their concerns would be reviewed in line with established procedures.
The ADC leadership reiterated its commitment to democratic principles, noting that peaceful protest remains a legitimate means of civic engagement in a democratic society. They called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in efforts to strengthen the country’s electoral system.
